In 1821, during the administration of Martín Rodríguez, the first public school in the province of Buenos Aires was founded under the name “Elementary School for Boys”, current School Nº1 Bernardino Rivadavia.

The Lancaster System of Education, which was based on the abler pupils being used as helpers to the teachers, was implemented for the instruction of children. The school was originally located at the corner where now stands the Town Hall, but it moved to its current building in 1921. Cardinal Raúl F. Primatesta and the Admiral Julián Irízar, a national hero who led the Antarctic Rescue Expedition in 1903, graduated here.
